A Very Controversial Article - By Athena Louise

A Very Controversial Article - By Athena Louise

This article is an online editorial article. I chose it because there are two very touchy social subjects and the author is very clearly against them. I'm not supporting or denying either of her claims at all. I wanted you to read something very emotionally written and respond to it. :) If you love her or hate her, (you all won't be in the same category) I hope you appreciate her passion & the sense of voice her writing contains. Your response should be 100-125 words. Include a word count.

Please remember no matter how you react to this article, your response must be respectful, as everyone will not agree with you. We can disagree and still get along, so be nice. Support your claims, but do not personally attack anyone or make general assumptions about groups of people.

  1. I feel the same way as the author in the fact that illegal aliens should not have the right to come to the U.S. When they come to live here they don’t pay taxes, they take over the jobs and lives of U.S. citizens. They find the easiest way to live, by registering their wives and children for every free service that their states they live in offer them. By them coming, they are making the U.S. citizens pay for them to live here because citizens have to pay their taxes that go towards them. I understand what the author is trying to say about Wal-Mart in the article, but in my opinion I am indifferent with the situation. (120)

  2. This country became the United States of America in 1776, the land of freedom. Our country and constitution was created by immigrants. The reason for our country being so messed up with aliens now is because our leaders always fall back on our constitution which was designed for immigrants.
Ask the Native Americans what they think of the 99.9% of people just like Athena Louise. How does it feel Athena? Let’s give you a little chunk of land, call it a reservation, and let the aliens take everything around you! They once thought the same thing you’re thinking. However, you gave them no choice. Besides that, I completely agree with Athena on the Wal-Mart topic. Adios.

  3. I agree with Athena’s points. Illegal immigration is something that should not be taken lightly. I understand that this country was founded by immigrants and I think that what was done to the Native American’s was wrong. We took their land and the only things we gave them in return were small reservations and pressure to become more like Americans. However, Americans did take over the land and form a government. In doing so they created Ellis Island, so that if people wanted to come no problem. They would just have to endure all the trials of becoming a citizen Now Illegal immigrants think that just because we have connecting boarders they can just come on over. Now how is that fair? (122)

  4. I would have to agree with the author about the fact that it is unfair for both the natural born and naturalized us citizens who do pay taxes to get some of the benefits that the illegal immigrants seem to receive so easily. It is appalling to me that the people who are here illegally get to reap the benefits while people who have a right to those benefits slip to the wayside.I have always been one to see the best in everyone but our government is failing us, they have turned their backs on us when we need them most. The government has put the need of other before its own and it is not a good thing. (120)

  6. I agree with the author but I can also see where people would disagree with her. I agree with her when she talks about illegal aliens. That is not right for them to come into our country and take people’s jobs away. They shouldn’t even be here in the first place. That story about the illegal alien at the end is horrible. He is using somebody else’s social security number and basically acting like he is that person. However, I am a fan of Wal-Mart. You can get almost anything there and it also has a ton of job opportunities for people in the area. For the insurance, I agree on that is stupid. They need to be insured by somebody outside of the company. (125)

  7. After reading this article I realized how little the US enforces laws about illegal aliens in the country. They don’t really do anything about it. They are drawing all of these free benefits but the government isn’t doing a check to see if they are citizens of the US. I can’t believe that one of the training classes for Wal-Mart was a class teaching you to draw welfare. In my opinion Welfare is over abused. I have saw people use a links card to buy 300 dollars worth of groceries and walk out and drive away in a newer Cadillac. That just doesn’t make sense to me. (107)

  8. This country is one for immigrants. Everyone is or has a family member who has traveled to this country in search for a better life. Why should we try to stop people from doing the same now? Do I agree with how some of the issues are handled? No, but I believe that all people should be given the chance to better their lives. We should welcome people to this country with open arms not with electric fences and guns. As for the Wal-mart issue, I completely agree that their business is one that uses its massive power to benefit itself. They need to be better regulated by the state and their “low prices” are allowed because of outsourcing to nations like China. It must all end.

  9. However wrong it may be for the employer to hire out illegal immigrants for cheap labor and to take away jobs from Americans can you blame them. Our society today is all about the money. The man with the money is the man with the power and the influence. Without money one does not survive in todays economy. It makes sense that these large employers including Wal-Mart hire out of our countries borders for cheap labor and manufactoring costs for it is much easier to turn a large profit. I can see how it can upset Americans about losing job opportunities but it also gives this "alien" a steady income. It gives them the opportunity to provide and care for their family. I can see the pros and cons for both sides.

  10. American law officials should protect our borders better from these illegal immigrants. It is unfair to the citizens and the government to have them here. They are paying no taxes and that is not fair to us citizens who are paying taxes because we have to pay even more to justify the expense of their benefits such as food stamps. Also, I don’t think that these rich people should be able to take over the city with their huge homes and big retaining walls. They should not be able to section off the river either. The river should be a public place for anyone to go just like it is here. Word count:(111)

  11. I agree with the author that illegal immigrants shouldn’t be allowed to come in to the United States and take advantage of our freedoms without being a citizen. For example, it isn’t fair that the immigrants in her town can apply for benefits and not have to pay taxes. Also I agree that the man who is using someone else’s social security number is committing identity theft, not helping the person. It really isn’t too hard to become a citizen so they should just apply and do that. However, on the Wal-Mart issue, I can’t really comment too much because I go to Wal-Mart a lot, so if I hated on it then I would be a hypocrite. (118)

  12. In all seriousness, illegal aliens are no different than us. We came here, speaking only our known languages, and took over land that was not ours. We stole what the Native Americans have, and now some of us have the gall to complain about illegal aliens coming here and doing the same thing to us. Americans complain about immigrants coming to our land, taking our jobs, when in reality they cannot even get higher up jobs without being legal. I do not agree with the author in any right, for the anger and scrutiny in this article is not needed, yet I respect the author's personal views. (107)
